Photoshop Tips #2

Eye of heaven

This is a simple step by step tutorial to familiarize people with Photoshop. It uses two jpegs as resources to produce an original picture.

Sun coming through

Picture 1 is a photograph of the sun coming through the clouds and

cat
Picture 2 is a picture of a cat (of which we only want its eye).

Here's what to do step by step.
1. First open a new folder on the desktop and name it Eye in the Sky.

2. Save both the pictures above into the folder.

3. Open Photoshop and select Picture 1 as your background picture by opening it with Photoshop.

4. Open Picture 2.

5. Make sure the toolbox is open and visible on the desktop (Window > Tools)

7. Select the Square Marquee Tool at the top left hand side of the toolbox.

8. Use the tool to select the right eye of the cat - this should leave a dashed box around the eye.

11. Once you you are happy you have the right amount selected go to Edit > Copy or press Ctrl + C.

12. Now go to picture 1 (the sky) and either go to Edit > Paste or press Ctrl + V.

13. You should now have the eye on a new layer in the middle of the sky, somewhat like this:

14. If you cannot see a layers window you need to go to Window > Layers.

15. You will now see both the Background and Layer 1 which is the cat’s eye. Make sure that Layer 1 is highlighted then leftclick the arrow next to Opacity at the top and a slider will appear. Either use this or type in the % box to adjust the opacity to 50%.

16. The cats eye is now semitransparent like in the picture below:

17. Now select the move tool in the toolbox or press v, and with the eye layer selected you can drag it around.

18. Using this method, place the eye over the sun in the image.

19. Keep the eye layer selected and with a combination of the eraser tool and then magnifying glass you can remove unwanted parts around the edge of the eye.

20. Zoom in with the magnifying glass and make sure u have all bits removed before moving to the next step.

21. Once you have zoomed out you should have something that looks like this:

22. Nearly finished, go to Layer > Flatten Image to flatten the layers into one. And now save the image as picture 3 in your eye in the sky folder.

23. Now open picture 1 again, the sky.

24. With picture one, use the marquee tool to select the whole image. Now copy it as before.

25. Go to picture 3, and paste it on top.

26. In the new layer you just made, change the opacity to 50% so you see the eye faintly.

27. Use the eraser tool with a soft brush - 48 pixels, to buff the middle of this layer.

28. What this will do is make the middle of the eye stronger and your aim is to get it so it looks like light is being emitted from behind it. Here's what it should look like when you are done:
